Advance Lupus Research
The Lupus Research Institute’s novel research approach delivers the discoveries that improve patient care. Our scientists are advancing new treatments while driving to a World Without Lupus — with the ultimate goal of prevention and a cure. But your help is needed to take lupus research to the Power of 10!
Lupus is considered by many to be the scientific prototype for autoimmune research because the immune system can attack any part of the body. When scientists unlock lupus, the door may open for some 100 other autoimmune diseases affecting millions of people.
How YOU can make this critical research possible:
Why Lupus Research Matters
Hope for a World Without Lupus starts in the lab. The Lupus Research Institute produces the kind of results that are transforming treatment and driving to a cure. With your support, our grants allow the most talented researchers to pursue high-risk, creative theories that have brought many of the most important breakthroughs in lupus. The numbers speak louder than words:
Over $170 million for novel, innovative research in lupus
140 Novel Research Grants awarded
84% success rate: Investigators prove novel hypotheses, publish results and win extended funding to move ideas from bench to bedside
92 cents of every dollar goes directly to fund novel lupus research
Learn About New Developments
Here are three of the most important LRI research successes of just this year:
- Preventing Dangerous Blood Clots in Lupus
- Calming Down the Immune System
- Hitting a Nerve to Prevent Organ Damage

Speak Up and Keep Talking
Contact your legislators to help make sure that biomedical research — and lupus in particular — gets its fair share of the Federal budget. We need to save the science!
Research is expensive and the major source of funding for biomedical research is the U.S. National Institutes of Health. But budget cuts have reduced the amount of research grants awarded. Reaching out to your legislators can help secure the funds needed to give the world’s best scientific talent the opportunity to deliver advances in lupus and autoimmune disease.

Issues we Fight for
We focus on funding for research needed for better treatments and for access so all patients can benefit from them.
Join the LRI National Coalition
Be a part of our nationwide network of patient groups supporting lupus research.
The LRI funds the high-risk research that delivers high-reward results — results that directly improve treatment. To date, we have committed over $40 million for lupus research. Our investment has tripled with an additional $130 million in grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and other sources.
But more funding is needed to keep up the pace. We still need better, safer treatments. We still need a cure. And we still need to apply our insights in lupus to find ways to stop autoimmune disease.
